However, it became known throughout the empire as the venue from where the country was unofficially run. Although not operational for over fifty years, its buildings are still in existence. The gates that were firmly shut to all but those who governed are now rusted open. Families inhabit the outbuildings, while the interconnected wings of the club are barely standing. The walls resonate with the sounds of colonial elitism and injustice. It was also used as an officers’ brothel by the Japanese Army during their brutal occupation. At a time of both stagnation and flux, this is a city filled with structures that infuse its painful past with the notion of not knowing what will come next. Whilst also being the very place where independence hero General Aung San was assassinated in 1947 and where an independent parliament met from 1948 until 1962. Inside these Victorian red brick walls is where so many pivotal decisions were made and history defining events took place. It is a building with an unnerving presence. The Glasgow imported steel foundations of the main buildings strain under the weight of rotting teak. Caretakers who live inside the buildings, speak of seeing white female ghosts wandering the corridors and stairwells at night. Overgrown verdant gardens swarm with green vine snakes that hang from tree branches, whilst soldiers barracks, stables and outhouses crumble and sink into the marshland below.
